Mindset means the way you think about something. This is very important to how we think about our own learning.
|
A fixed mindset means you think intelligence is set. You either have it or you don't. It doesn't change.
A growth mindset believes your intelligience can change. With practice, you can learn, gain more skills and get better.
Task 1: How would you explain "fixed" and "growth" mindset in Japanese IN YOUR OWN WORDS? Then, how would you explain it in English
Video #1. You will watch a video about growth and fixed mindset. Before you watch, make sure you understand these words:
delineates = to see/make a difference.
innate=natural, with you from the start
permanent=doesn't change
pivot=to change direcction
minimal=very little
continuum=a line, with opposite things at each end.
obstacle= a problem or challenge. Something that stops you.
innovate=to change, something that makes progress.
Now watch this 2 1/2 minute video. Turn ON the subtitles (CC).
You might want to slow down the speed. (Gear logo. Choose "playback speed." Choose .75.

Read THIS handout. Think about the meaning. How would you explain it in Japanese? In SIMPLE English?
Video 2: (5 minutes) This is based on the work of Dr. Carol Dweck, Stanford University.
What does it mean for you as a teacher? Watch this video (again:
• turn on the subtitles
• slow it down if you want
Think about your teaching. Think about when you "praise" (say good things) to children.
